17th February 2021
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We have successfully come to the end of the first half of term. It has been a great term of reuniting with our Braestars face to face, after months of RTL. I want to sincerely thank you for your support throughout the period we have been in school. Observing the health and hygiene protocols was well received and we endeavour to continue walking with both staff and students in ensuring safety while we are in school.
Mid Term Reports
The midterm reports for year 7, 8, 9, 10 and BTEC will be sent through the parent’s portal. Kindly take time to go through the report with your child/ward and discuss any areas that may need improvement. Parent-teachers’ consultation meetings are scheduled to take place after the midterm break. We will share links as we intend to hold them virtually to avoid crowding in school.
Mock Examinations
Year 11, 12 and 13 students completed their mock examinations just before the half term break. The mocks are necessary because they assess the present skill of learners in a subject and inform them of how much more work they need to do. They get to know if more assistance is required in a specific field and it guides them on the examination techniques to review. Learners are encouraged to continue studying for the end of course examinations.
Key Stage 3 Inter House Debate Finals
We are pleased to announce that the Middle School held it’s second and final round of the Annual Inter House Debating competition on Thursday, 11th February 2021. Simba House was represented by Megan M. (Year 7S), Daniel M. (Year 7S), David H. (Year 8S), and Nicole S. (Year 9S) while Nyati House was represented by Letesia A. (Year 7N), Takudzwa M. (Year 8N) and Ava M. (Year 9N).
Simba House clinched the Overall Best House Trophy after they cleverly proposed the motion, ‘That Humanity Should Fear Advances In Artificial Intelligence’. It was indeed fulfilling to see how learners celebrated the success they worked so hard for. The content and delivery portrayed by both teams demonstrated great erudition in our debaters. Congratulations to Simba House and well done to Nyati House.
Clubs and After School Activities
I am happy to report that we have decided to offer some clubs after school for some days. We therefore request that you discuss with your son/daughter (Years 7-10) on which activity to take up after school. This is, however optional.
Valentine Charity Bake Sale
On Friday, 12th February 2021, the Annual Charity Bake Sale was organized by the sixth form students. The students sold rose flowers and candy in strict adherence to the Covid 19 protocols. The event offered the BTEC students an opportunity to get proof of their course work in event management, while their A-level peers had an opportunity for experiential learning. The proceeds from this event will be used for corporate social responsibility.
Braestar Shines in Athletics
Our Braestar Nina D. (Year 11N) was selected to compete for a spot in the Kenya National Athletics Team by Athletics Kenya for the IAAF World Relay Championships May 2021 in Selesia, Poland. Nina has been competing in a series of time trial races in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 meters events. She is waiting for communication on whether or not she will compete in the final trials which will be held on March 26-27th. We look forward to Nina joining the National team and we appreciate her for representing Braeside well while keeping up with her studies. Go Nina!
In her own words, this is what she had to say: “To be honest it was such a great experience. The intensity was on another level as I was running against people who have been to the Olympics or have been running for a longer time than me. At first I was scared but I told myself that age is just a number in sports”.
Wishing you a restful half term break.
Regards,
Mr. Wallen Nyamota
