6th February 2021
Dear Parent/Guardian,
It is the end of yet another busy and exciting week. We have all enjoyed learning and participating in various activities.
Mathletics
The highlight of the week was the Mathletics which was themed, ‘Ecomaths.’ We wish to thank you all for supporting us and making it happen. The children had fun and were delighted in their learning as they calculated the amount of carbon dioxide emitted; the calories burned and the cost incurred by different modes of transport.
We also looked at the importance of trees and had a chance to work out and estimate the height as well as the number of leaves on the different trees. Our measurement, algebra and number skills came alive this week. We urge you to encourage your child to apply their mathematics in real life.
Children’s Mental Health Week
We joined the children around the world in celebrating the Mental Health Week. The theme this year was, ‘Express Yourself.’ The children were encouraged to express themselves in poetry, song, dance, art, dressing up and many other ways.
Below is a message from the school counsellor:
This week has been Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Yet, there is no way we can achieve children’s mental health without the mental health of their caregivers. Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated (WHO, 2018). With Covid-19 pandemic, children were denied interaction with friends, nature, relatives and sporting activities that help them create a healthy physical and mental life. Parents on the other hand were burdened to keep their jobs and businesses as they helped their children attend school remotely. All these can affect the normal parent child relationship and affect both parent and children’s mental health. To help the children remain mentally healthy, parents have to be mentally healthy first. This means getting some time away from the hustle and bustle of life and investing in the self to rejuvenate the drained energy. Do it your way. Pick what works for you and use it. It could be yoga, a brisk walk, cycling, going to the gym, swimming, dance or even mindfulness exercises. These activities help our bodies and mind to function better. We are able to interact with the children in a calm collected way that makes them feel calm as well and in effect feel loved and important. Good interaction between a child and a parent also helps the child to remain motivated to do the things that they should do like, homework, projects and sports.
Remember, your mental health comes first and it is the foundation of your child’s mental health. Just like in an aeroplane, the instructions for safety are clear in case of an emergency. Put on your oxygen mask and parachute first, then attend to your child. If we do not do things this way, then we sink and we sink with our children. Take care of your mental health.
Mid-term Tests
The students will sit for their midterm test next week as follows:
Monday, 8th: Arithmetic and Reading
Tuesday, 9th: SPAG and Maths P2
Wednesday, 10th: Maths P3
The test timetable has been uploaded in the respective Google Classrooms. For practice, kindly ask your child to check their online platforms. There are many activities and materials that they can use. We hope you will support them accordingly.
New Braestar
We are glad to receive another new Braestar who joined us this week. We welcome Yara A. to Braeside School.
Here is what she had to say:
'Braeside is an exciting and beautiful school that has many activities and sports that are taught in a fun way. I am settling in well and I have already made some friends'.
